HOME HISTORY PRODUCTS FAQ CONTACT

Q. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been around for decades, how come they were not used before?
A. The LEDs you are referring to were single color low output used in calculators and other displays. As they got brighter, they found their way into traffic lights and car tail lights. The break through was the white light emitting LED developed by the American company Cree, suitable for general illumination. The white light emitting LED is actually a bright blue color LED coated with a phosphor that emits white light when excited by the blue color under it.

Q. What should I look for when considering a purchase?
A. Energy Star has a non-binding draft of what will soon become a standard.
We recommend the following:

  1. Approval for electrical safety (UL, CSA, or ETL)
  2. 3 year warranty
  3. No interference with other wireless devices (FCC part 15)
  4. CRI of 80 or better
  5. Power factor of 0.9 or higher
  6. Do you like how it looks and the light output?

Q. LED bulbs look somewhat the same, can they be screwed in as exact replacements for incandescent and CFL's?
A. In most cases, yes. Remember that the old style fixtures were designed to prevent fire hazard from the intense heat of incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs just get warm to the touch, but they must have air circulation to get rid of what little heat they produce or their light output will decline.

Q. What about T8 fluorescent replacements? I don’t want to have to rewire all my fixtures!
A. The replacement we offer requires no re-wiring (other than adding a power supply with 2 wires) and is isolated low voltage and much safer. The tubes are unbreakable and contain no mercury. The manufacturer offers a three year warranty, and the bulb has a design life of 50,000 to 80,000 hours.
